Welcome to Sri Lanka! Upon your arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport, you will be greeted by our friendly guide and transferred to the ancient city of Anuradhapura, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the island’s oldest capitals. The city is steeped in history and spirituality, with links to both Buddhist traditions and Ramayana legends.
After check-in at your hotel, you can relax or take a gentle evening stroll around sacred sites such as the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi — a sacred fig tree believed to be a cutting from the original Bodhi tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment.
Overnight stay in Anuradhapura.
Today, immerse yourself in Anuradhapura’s vast archaeological sites. Visit the Isurumuniya Temple, famous for its beautiful rock carvings and believed to be a place where Ravana — the legendary king from the Ramayana — meditated and lived.
Explore ruins of palaces, stupas, and ancient reservoirs that tell stories from Sri Lanka’s rich past. The tranquil surroundings create a mystical atmosphere connecting history and legend.
In the evening, you can attend a traditional cultural performance or spend time at your leisure.
Overnight stay in Anuradhapura.
Travel to Mihintale, a spiritual mountain where Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka. According to local lore, this site also has connections to the Ramayana era, where divine beings and legendary figures are believed to have descended.
Climb the ancient stairways and visit stupas and caves that enhance the spiritual ambience. Later, proceed to Sigiriya, the iconic rock fortress with strong ties to ancient Sri Lankan kings who are sometimes linked in folklore to the Ramayana narrative.
Overnight stay in Sigiriya.
Begin your day by climbing the majestic Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a marvel of ancient engineering and art, believed to have been a royal palace and fortress during the time that coincides with some Ramayana legends. Enjoy panoramic views and discover frescoes that have stood the test of time.
In the afternoon, visit the Dambulla Cave Temple, famous for its stunning Buddhist murals and statues carved into caves. These sacred caves have served as a refuge for pilgrims for centuries and are intertwined with many myths, including those connected to the Ramayana.
Optionally, enjoy an afternoon safari at Minneriya National Park, famous for large herds of wild elephants.
Overnight stay in Sigiriya.
Transfer to Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka’s second ancient capital, where you can explore the extensive ruins of palaces, temples, and sculptures. Some historians believe that parts of these ruins date back to eras overlapping with the Ramayana timeline, adding an intriguing layer to your journey.
Visit the Gal Vihara rock temple with its gigantic Buddha statues carved from granite. The intricate craftsmanship reflects the spiritual devotion of the time and ties in with the epic’s themes of faith and devotion.
Overnight stay in Polonnaruwa.
Travel eastwards to Trincomalee, a coastal city with deep Hindu and Ramayana connections. Visit the magnificent Koneswaram Temple, perched on Swami Rock, overlooking the Indian Ocean. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is believed to have existed since ancient times, referenced in the Ramayana as part of Lanka’s sacred geography.
Enjoy some relaxation time at the pristine Nilaveli Beach, known for its crystal-clear waters and serene environment.
Overnight stay in Trincomalee.
Today, explore areas around Mullaitivu and nearby coastal regions believed to be linked with the legendary Ram Setu (Adam’s Bridge) — the chain of shoals that, according to the Ramayana, was constructed by Lord Rama’s army to reach Lanka.
You can visit quiet beaches and small fishing villages, soaking in the tranquil coastal atmosphere and imagining the epic battles and adventures described in the Ramayana.
Return to Trincomalee for overnight stay.
Drive to Kandy, the cultural capital nestled in the hills. On the way, you can stop at Wasgamuwa National Park for a wildlife safari (optional), where you might see elephants, deer, and exotic birds.
In the evening, enjoy a traditional Kandyan dance performance, showcasing the island’s rich cultural heritage, including stories that draw inspiration from epics like the Ramayana.
